Campaign Overview

Plum Goodness is an Indian beauty brand whose range spans skincare, makeup such as kajal, and a bodycare line, Plum BodyLovin. In March 2021 it announced "TIME FOR OUR BIGGEST GIVEAWAY EVER!" on giveaway.plumgoodness.com, and the numbers backed up the headline.

The giveaway ran from March 19 to March 31, 2021. 61,430 people signed up and 52,937 of them confirmed their email, an 86% confirmation rate. The page recorded 1,119,689 page views, and entrants completed 87,992 bonus actions, more than one and a half per confirmed entrant.

Campaign Strategy

Plum combined two kinds of reward. At the top, three hampers worth Rs. 5,000 went to the two highest scorers and one lucky winner, so the most active entrants had a clear target and everyone else still had a chance. Underneath, a guaranteed reward ladder paid out to anyone who reached it: 500 points unlocked an "adorable set of 2 Plum minis" free on the next order, 750 points a 20% discount code, and 1,000 points a free curated hamper worth Rs. 1,000+. The page put it plainly: "you're ALL special to us."

The first two rewards only pay out on a purchase, so the ladder also worked as a reason to place the next order. Confirming an email added 52 points, and fifteen bonus actions were available:

  • Follows and subscriptions: follow @PlumGoodness on Instagram (200 pts), follow @PlumBodyLovin (100 pts) and subscribe on YouTube (100 pts).
  • YouTube engagement: watch and thumbs-up two YouTube videos (50 pts and 25 pts).
  • Instagram amplification: tag three friends on the post (25 pts), repost to your story (25 pts), post to your story (25 pts), post on Instagram (75 pts) and try a Plum filter (50 pts).
  • Beauty content: upload a photo of you and your Plums (100 pts), share a #MaskingMoment (100 pts), reuse your empties (100 pts), share your favorite kajal look (75 pts) and upload an image (50 pts).

The actions added up to 1,100 points, 1,152 with the confirmation bonus, so an entrant who did everything cleared the 1,000-point hamper tier without a single referral.

Viral Mechanics & Growth Engine

Each referred friend added 50 points, but most of the reach came from the action list. The six highest-volume actions were all follows, views or shares: 13,787 Instagram follows for @PlumGoodness (the highest-value action at 200 points), 13,709 completions on the first YouTube video, 13,445 YouTube subscriptions, 11,843 completions on the second video, 10,114 tag-three-friends completions and 9,592 story reposts. Together they made up 72,490 of the 87,992 completions (82%).

The content prompts were built around real routines, and they drew real volume: 3,306 photos with Plum products, 2,614 #MaskingMoment shares, 1,913 image uploads, 1,512 kajal looks, 1,237 Instagram posts, 1,175 filter tries, 1,011 story posts and 569 "reuse your empties" submissions, 13,337 content completions in all. The sub-brand follow for @PlumBodyLovin added 2,165 completions.

The milestone rewards gave every entrant a visible next step: a "Pro Plumster Alert!" reward at 100 points, then "Plum Lover" at 500, "VIP Status" at 750 and "Plum Buff" at 1,000.

Results & Impact

  • 61,430 sign-ups, of which 52,937 confirmed their email (86%).
  • 1,119,689 page views in 13 days.
  • 87,992 bonus actions completed across 15 tasks.
  • 13,787 Instagram follows for @PlumGoodness and 13,445 YouTube subscriptions.
  • 13,337 content completions, led by 3,306 photos with Plum products and 2,614 #MaskingMoment shares.

The confirmation rate stands out as much as the volume. With 86% of sign-ups confirming, almost everyone who started the form became a reachable entrant, and a large share of them went on to follow, subscribe and post.

Why This Strategy Works

A reward ladder uses the goal-gradient effect: the closer people get to a threshold, the harder they work to reach it. Plum set the thresholds so the full action list cleared the top tier, which made 1,000 points feel achievable rather than aspirational, and every step on the way had a named tier and a concrete reward. The top-scorer hampers added competition for the most engaged, while the random winner kept the draw open to everyone.

The costs are low relative to what the brand collects. Minis, discount codes and curated hampers are inventory Plum already had, and in return it gained tens of thousands of confirmed emails, Instagram followers, YouTube subscribers and product posts. For beauty and personal care brands with an active social community, this is the template worth copying.

Key Takeaways

  1. Guarantee something at every level. Rewards at 500, 750 and 1,000 points meant effort always paid, not just for the top scorers.
  2. Tie rewards to the next order. Free minis and a 20% code only pay out on a purchase, so the giveaway fed straight into sales.
  3. Weight the follow you want most. @PlumGoodness was the 200-point action and the single most-completed one.
  4. Turn product routines into prompts. #MaskingMoment, kajal looks and reusing empties drew thousands of posts.
  5. Mix skill and luck at the top. Two hampers for top scorers and one random winner kept both committed and casual entrants in the game.
