Referral growth ahead of a token sale
The Prize
1,600 InBit tokens for tasks + 100 per referral
How Entry Worked
- •A fixed token allocation instead of a draw: 1,600 InBit tokens for completing a set of optional tasks
- •Every referred friend earned the referrer 100 InBit tokens, with no referral cap stated in the first round
- •Tokens were paid after the token sale, and only to participants who stayed subscribed to PrepayWay's social channels
- •KYC was required to withdraw tokens, and the page listed every excluded country, including the United States and Switzerland

PrepayWay describes itself as a tool for international business that combines the functions of lawyers, banks, guarantors and arbitration courts, bringing contracts for international transactions, settlements and dispute resolution into one place. Ahead of its token sale, it ran a token airdrop on airdrop.prepayway.com under the headline "Welcome to PrepayWay Airdrop" and the sub-headline "Enter & Get InBit Tokens."
The airdrop ran from May 28, 2018 to March 26, 2019. 11,498 people signed up and 9,426 of them confirmed their email, close to the 10,000 participants the airdrop was sized for. The page recorded 46,064 page views over the campaign.
It was one of three campaigns PrepayWay ran on the domain: this first airdrop, a second airdrop round and a short points-based device contest. Together they collected 15,562 confirmed entrants.
Campaign Strategy
An airdrop works differently from a giveaway. Instead of a draw with one winner, PrepayWay announced a fixed pool: 17,000,000 InBit tokens for 10,000 participants. Every eligible participant could earn 1,600 InBit tokens for completing a set of simple tasks, plus 100 InBit tokens for every friend they referred. Tokens were to be distributed after the token sale, and withdrawing them to an Ethereum wallet required passing KYC.
The flow on the page had four steps: "Join Airdrop, Get Your Unique Share Link, Share & Complete Tasks, Get InBit Tokens." The rules did the rest of the work:
- Task allocation: 1,600 InBit tokens for completing the listed tasks, all of which were optional.
- Referral allocation: 100 InBit tokens per referred friend, credited through each participant's unique share link.
- Retention condition: participants had to stay subscribed to PrepayWay's social channels until the end of the token sale.
- Community rules: spam or promotional links in the PrepayWay Telegram group meant an immediate ban, and Telegram usernames containing ads or web addresses were not eligible for payout.
- Eligibility: citizens of the United States, Switzerland and a list of other countries and regions were excluded, and the page named every one of them.
The audience was people who follow early-stage blockchain projects, and the offer was built for them: a known allocation for a known amount of effort, paid in the project's own token.
Viral Mechanics & Growth Engine
The growth engine was the referral link. Each referred friend was worth 100 InBit tokens to the referrer, and the first round stated no cap on referrals, so a participant's allocation grew with every person they brought in. The platform counted each referral as 100 points, matching the token reward one for one.
The retention condition is what made those sign-ups useful beyond the campaign. Tokens were paid only after the token sale, and only to people still subscribed to PrepayWay's channels, so participants had a reason to stay for the whole period between sign-up and distribution rather than for the length of a draw.
The rules also protected the community the airdrop was building. Cheating voided a participant's tokens, and the Telegram anti-spam rules kept the group usable for people who joined to follow the project.
Results & Impact
- 11,498 sign-ups, of which 9,426 confirmed their email (82%).
- 9,426 confirmed entrants against an airdrop sized for 10,000 participants, or 94% of the planned total.
- 46,064 page views, about four for every sign-up.
- A ten-month run, from May 28, 2018 to March 26, 2019.
- 15,562 confirmed entrants across three campaigns on the domain.
PrepayWay reused the format for a second round, which closed on April 24, 2019, and tightened the terms: 22,400,000 InBit tokens for 8,000 participants, 800 tokens for tasks, 100 per referral up to a maximum of 20 referrals, a mandatory Telegram chat, and no entry for anyone from the first round. It drew 6,762 sign-ups and 5,165 confirmed entrants. PrepayWay also ran a points-based contest from January 11 to February 5, 2019, raffling an Apple iPad 32GB (2018) among the ten highest scorers and a Samsung Gear Fit2 Pro among all participants, which collected 971 confirmed entrants.
Why This Strategy Works
An airdrop replaces the odds of a draw with a known reward. Visitors do not have to estimate their chances; they can read how many tokens a task or a referral earns and decide whether to take part. That clarity lowers the barrier to confirming and sharing, and 82% of the people who signed up went on to confirm their email.
The conditions matter as much as the reward. Making payout depend on staying subscribed until the token sale turns a one-time sign-up into a standing relationship with the project's channels, and the anti-spam rules keep those channels usable. For any early-stage project that wants a community in place before a launch, and can offer a fixed, clearly stated reward to every participant, this is the template worth copying.
Key Takeaways
- Publish the allocation, not just the prize. Stating the total pool, the participant cap and the per-task and per-referral amounts told every visitor exactly what they could earn.
- Pay a fixed amount per referral. A set reward for each friend brought in gives every participant a reason to share their link.
- Tie the reward to staying. Paying out only after the token sale, to people still subscribed, gave participants a reason to remain in the community until distribution.
- Write the rules into the page. Eligibility, KYC, anti-spam and anti-cheating terms were spelled out before anyone signed up.
- Tighten the terms in round two. The second round capped referrals at 20, made Telegram mandatory and excluded first-round participants.
